I’ve just published my new book of Short Stories, “All Roads at Any Time”, which is now available at Shavasana Gallery Café

I’ve just completed this project, managing to wade through the complexities of self-publishing using Amazon KDP, and am happy to announce that my book of short stories (twelve in all), “All Roads at Any Time”…has been published in paperback form, and is now available for purchase.

What’s it about? Here’s a little descriptive from the back cover:

“This collection shares the experiences of a young long-haired wanderer dodging mass murderers, muggings, revolutions, drug overdoses and other narrow escapes in the 70’s, to the unexpected heroics of a New Wave dilettante in Ottawa, and young dad in Vancouver in the 80’s. It navigates its way through some of the unanticipated side-effects of the long journey to sobriety, and ultimately drops you off on a sweet island of bliss and healing in the current era.”

Writing, which I enjoy, was the easy part. Formatting a WordDoc and cover design were beyond my ken, and I was saved from these struggles by Deborah Strong and Teresa Gustafson of TG Design respectively – for which I am most grateful.

I haven’t yet started work on the eBook version, or the Audiobook, but if you’d like to pick up a paperback copy of “All Roads at Any Time”, there are currently 3 ways to do so. The first way, would be to go to Amazon and buy it directly, just click this link:

https://www.amazon.ca/All-Roads-At-Any-Time/dp/B0CDF2C8T5/ref=sr_1_1?crid=HMYB7OI7LN3N&keywords=all+roads+at+any+time&qid=1692293828&sprefix=all+roads+at%2Caps%2C3769&sr=8-1

Or, copies will be available at Shavasana Gallery & Café https://shavasana.ca/  (457 Village Bay Road, Mayne Island, B.C – usually open Saturday through Monday)…I was surprised and delighted to see this happen last weekend when I put out a stack of books:

Or, thirdly, you could order a copy (or copies) through me and I will get it to you either directly (if we are in close proximity), or via mail. The book is $19.95 Canadian and I imagine postage will be $4 or $5 (I haven’t calculated that yet). To reach me directly you can either send me a message through this website, or via email at: gbathgate@telus.net , or give me a call or text at: 604-418-3846.

Cheers! …and happy reading!

Art Opening! Jerryann Hamilton & Abigail Hain, “Textures of Mayne” Friday August 4th, 7 – 9

Yes! We are having and Art Opening for Jerryann Hamilton & Abigail Hain’s new show, “Textures of Mayne” on Friday August 4th between 7 and 9 pm.

Although Jerryann and I hung the show a few weeks ago, as a “soft-opening”, Abigail has been in Scotland so we’ve been awaiting her return to have our official “Meet the Artist” night this coming Friday.

Here are a few photos of the exhibit:

Just of a few examples of Abby’s & Jerryann’s varied talents working on fabric, paper, canvas & seashell!

Thus far, the show has been very well-received, by islanders and visitors as well. I am writing this from my home in Kitsilano, getting ready to head back to Mayne Island tomorrow to begin preparations for our Friday night event – which is in two days! Rumour has it that Abby’s husband Alistair is a great cook and will be preparing some of the food for our event…hopefully it doesn’t include fresh Haggis flown in from Scotland!

And here are a few more photos of this beautiful show:

Hope to see you Friday night! Cheers!

“Defining Chaos – Playing With Colour, Shape & Line”, acrylic Paintings by Elisabeth Jahren, June 16 – July 16

Shavasana Gallery & Café is very pleased to announce that Elisabeth Jahren will be gracing the walls of the gallery with her beautiful acrylic abstract paintings for the next month, from June 16 to July 16!

Elisabeth is truly a renaissance woman with her many talents and accomplishments. While most island residents will – no doubt – be aware of her contributions to our community as the island’s veterinarian, she is also an accomplished piano player and accordionist, performing regularly at island venues (and even recently in Italy! with violist, Chris Redsell).

I became aware of her considerable artistic abilities perhaps 4 or 5 years ago when I began to notice examples of her paintings being posted on Social Media. I was immediately taken with her creative imagery and imaginative style, making sophisticated use of colour, shape & concept. Since that initial viewing, and subsequent opportunities to see her work in person, I have been consistently impressed with the many pieces she has managed to produce. And now she’s bringing her work to Shavasana Gallery – Im thrilled!

Here are just a few examples of Elisabeth’s work. I love her ability to experiment with form and colour and expand her creative style. As of this writing I have not seen which paintings she’s bringing to the Gallery so these are just a few possibilities I’ve selected from Social Media. It’s going to be a surprise for me – and you!

We are having an Art Opening on Saturday June 17 from 7pm to 9pm, at Shavasana Gallery & Café, 457 Village Bay Road – Refreshments will be served. Please come and join us!🙏

ps. There’s a rumour that Elisabeth may also entertain the guests with a little piano interlude on the Blüthner, accompanied by Stephen Cropper

The rumours were true! Elisabeth and operatic singer Stephen Cropper entertained the guests with three songs for piano and two for accordion.

Refreshments for the evening comprised appetizers made by Elisabeth’s friend Natela, and a fruit punch provide by Shavasana Gallery – here’s a look at some of the yummy offerings that the guests enjoyed

And a few more examples of Elisabeth’s gorgeous work

I can’t believe how fast this month has gone by! But as they say, “Time flies while you’re having fun!” and I’ve been enjoying myself completely, these past 3 weeks, surrounded by Elisabeth Jahren’s wonderful abstract acrylic paintings🙏

Here’s are just a few examples from the studio of E. J….and the artist herself!

Shavasana Gallery & Café will be open Friday and Saturday, 9 – 4, and Sunday 10:15 to 4. Come on down for a hot or cold beverage and a chance to view Elisabeth’s exhibit – before it gets spirited away!

Shavasana Gallery & Café – opening March 17 – 19

Just letting you all know that I will be opening the Gallery Café this coming Friday March 17 through Sunday March 19.

I just finished my taxes this morning and am in dire need of some therapeutic “island time.”😊

I also left a new mask, half-finished, when I was over earlier this month – keeping fresh in the fridge – and need to return and complete it before the clay hardens and dries out. I’m including a couple of photos of “Full Buck Moon – Version 3” to give you an idea of what the new mask will look like.

Hope some of you can drop in and say hi while I’m over!

Cheers!

George
